Spring is Here!

I’m absolutely excited that spring is here. There are lots of flowers around our house, with pink and white flowers throughout our trees. Look at these pretty pictures mommy took. Another reason I love spring is that my birthday is directly in the middle. I’m so excited!

The Pressed Flower Idea

One night while my family and I were listening to Unshackled, (a free radio drama online that tells of people’s conversion to Christ.) I had my dried flowers out thinking about what I could make with so few flowers. I decided to take out some paper and make a picture of a bicycle. It didn’t turn out at all as I expected. Thankfully, I didn’t glue the flowers. I took them off the paper then showered the paper with the dried rose petals. Then a large petal fell to the floor and I reached down to pick it up. As I studied the petal, it reminded me of a heart. A Heart! That’s what I’ll make. I used diluted glue to paste them together on a piece of construction paper. This is how the project turned out. I still plan to make a bookmark.

This has been a fun project!

Getting a new Yellow Van

We have a family of ten and we have a van that has only twelve seats.  When we go on vacation, we have to store all of our luggage on the rack on top of the van. When my dad mentioned to my mom that were outgrowing our van, they started looking for fifteen passenger vans. After a long search, they found someone who restores old vans and makes them like new. Our first van was white, but my parents wanted to try something unique, something that was fun and adventurous. My parents and older sister voted for yellow, and the rest of us voted for any other color that would not stand out. But I learned that even if there are more kids, parents decisions still outweigh the majority vote.  Dad and mom were pretty exited on getting their new yellow van. Here is how she looks.

The Pressed Flowers

Remember I told you about the dried flowers I was making? Well, they are finally completed after waiting for about a week and a half almost two weeks, I finally took the flowers out of the press and the flowers are all flat and dry, which is prefect to make into a bookmark, but I haven’t made one yet.

It was exciting to remove the flowers and to touch them and see them once they dried.

Pressing Flowers

I love to read books, and decided to make pressed flower bookmarks.  I took flower petals from the table, and sandwiched them between six pieces of newspaper. Then I put them into a spare telephone book and wrapped three rubber bands, evenly spaced around the book.  Five days later I changed any soiled papers and examined the flowers. You’re really not supposed to disturb the paper touching the flowers, but I just had to. They were so amazing!  Now I need to wait one to two more weeks. I can hardly wait.  I’ll make sure to share the results.

I’m so excited!

Killing a Goat for Passover

For Passover this year our family killed a goat.  How did we do it?  First, we tied the goats back legs with string and hung it upside down from a gambrel. Then we took a very sharp knife and slit the throat! We let the blood flow into a container.  We then proceeded to skin the goat and remove the guts.  Finally, we cut the head off.  After, we cut the rest of the body into pieces.  After washing the meat a few times with water, we prepared it for smoking in an underground bar-b-que that we made with dad.  We wrapped it in a moist potato sack and buried it in the ground for 24 hours.  When we took it out and tried to cut the meat off the bones, we didn’t need to-the meat came off the bones without any effort leaving them perfectly clean!  The meat was fantastic!

Passover!

Passover is coming up! If you never heard of it before, I’ll tell you. Passover is a holiday that is described in the Bible.  It is a Jewish holiday. What is the Passover story? Passover is when the Israelites were in Egypt and God commanded a man named Moses to lead the people out of slavery from the Egyptians. Moses refused saying, “Lord I am slow to speak.” So God told Moses that Aaron, his brother, would speak for him. Then Moses told Aaron what God said to him. They went to pharaoh and said, “Let my people go!” but the pharaoh hardened his heart.  Moses threw down his rod and it became a serpent. Pharos’ men did the same but Moses snake ate up the others’. Than Aaron pleaded for his people again but pharaoh didn’t listen again, and again God sent plagues.  God sent a total of ten plagues, listed in order: God turned the waters into blood, sent frogs coming out of the river, than lice, then sent flies, than he let all the Egyptians’ cattle die but preserved the livestock of the Israelites, then he sent hailstones the size of a man’s fist, then he sent locusts that ate every green thing, then he sent boils, then he made three days of pure darkness, and finally God said, “kill a lamb and put its blood on your doorpost and you shall eat the lamb that night.  And when the spirit of God passes your over door if you have put the blood on door your first born son shall live.” “If you don’t put the blood on your doorpost, your firstborn son shall die.”  Of course pharaoh didn’t believe what God said so his firstborn son died.  That was the last of the plagues and finally Pharaoh let the people go! That’s the story of Passover! In Deuteronomy 16:2 Thou shalt therefore sacrifice the Passover unto the Lord thy God, of the flock and the herd in the place witch the Lord shall choose the place his name there. That is why we sacrifice Passover. And also God commands to let us keep the Passover because it is a shadow of him dying in the cross and there is another shadow that is to come to pass.

FW: Spring is coming!

Spring is Coming! We have started to grow our garden. All of my siblings have started to play outside again! This spring, we purchased meat and egg laying chicks. The trees are if full bloom with their flowers. The sun is growing hotter and some of my siblings have already begun to swim in the little pool. We even planted our new flowers and they are already growing fast! This summer will be fun!

More Baby Goats!

Yesterday, our goat Mary had a baby goat. It was a boy.  He is so cute. Today as I went out to gather the eggs, I found the him sleeping in a food bin-what a hilarious site. I picked him up and he nestled his head against my neck. His hair was so silky. It is so cute how new-born baby goats walk. They seem as though they are wearing high heels. New-born goats are a wonderful animals to have.

I absolutely enjoy them!

Upcoming Science Fair.

Our homeschool group has a science fair annually, which we have decided to enter this year. We all want to do something different. Amy and Hannah want to research yeast. I want to build a rocket, and explain how they work. Yesterday, I began to write about how they launch and what interested me in rockets. My interest stemmed from space shuttle failures. For example, in one failure, a piece of foam from the Space Shuttle External Tank during take-off, no bigger than a brief-case and about two pounds in weight hit the wing of Columbia, causing a hole 18 inches in diameter. During re-entry back to earth, this hole created friction, causing a high amount of super-heated gases to enter into the shuttle wing. This caused the Columbia to disintegrate in the air shortly before landing.

I absolutely can’t wait for the science fair. I’m so excited!

2013 Spring Concert

This year Amy and I decided to play our duet from our aunt’s wedding, Cannon in D by Pachelbel. Long  before our time came to play the duet, I was shaking in my shoes. It felt as though the ground was shaking. When I told dad, he said that being nervous before an audience is normal, and over time, I will become more comfortable. I’m wondering what king of solo or duet I’m going to do next year.  After our recital, we had our annual going-out celebration - this year we went to a Mexican restaurant. The celebration was fun.

It was awesome day!

Drawing Lessons

My mom is very talented with drawing. She decided to teach us how to draw also, so she bought a drawing notebook for all of my siblings and me. That same day we had our first drawing lesson and learned to draw a few pictures.  Her first lesson included showing us how to draw with a grid. This requires you to draw squares on your art board and squares on your picture.  Then, you can transfer the picture from each square to the art board.  Dividing the picture in pieces makes it easier to draw.  Here is a picture of our first day.

ZitZits

For these past months dad has been thinking about wearing zitzits because God says in Numbers 15:37-40,  “Again Yahweh spoke to Moses, saying, ‘Speak to the children of Israel: Tell them to make tassels on the corners of their garments throughout their generations, and to put a blue thread in the tassels of the corners. And you shall have a tassel that you may look upon it and remember all the commandments of Yahweh and do them, and that you may not follow the harlotry to which your own heart and your own eyes are inclined, and that you may remember and do all My commandments, and be holy for your Elohim.’” In  Deuteronomy 22:12 God says, “You shall make tassels on the four corners of the clothing with which to cover yourself.” So we started out by buying a special type of thread from CreateForLess.  I’m excited about making them, and they are not hard to make.

We just want to obey God and do what he has commanded us to do.

Baby Goats

On January 13th 2013 our goat patches had 3 babies. Caleb was feeding the goats when he found patches in labor.  He ran to the house and shouted, “Patches is having babies!” That surprised us all.  Everyone excitedly ran out of the house, and sure enough we had three healthy baby goats.  We have 2 girls and 1 boy.  We are probably going to name them Cinnamon, Nutmeg and Allspice.

Caleb's b-day

Last Saturday was Caleb’s birthday.  We made cupcakes the day before to share at family sports day.  At sports day the next day, we ate lunch.  Caleb loves basketball, but he became sick.  Before he went to bed, he even threw up.  That was not a fun way for him to celebrate his birthday.

Sleepers At The Joulfaian's

We gather with at least one other family almost every week to watch a live sermon and share dinner together.  On one occasion, Caleb, Lisah, Gracie and even Dad fell asleep on the couch during the sermon.  When  he woke up, he looked around and took these pictures. I like the one of Gracie sleeping on Lisah, it’s hilarious.

Chopping Fire Wood

In our front yard we had two big dead almond trees. Dad decided to uproot them, but had no way to pull them out. He called Mr. Butler to help him pull them out.  Mr. Butler, his brother, and son came with his big truck.  They tied a chain from the tree to the truck, and Mr. Butler drove straight very fast. After a few tries of pulling, they succeeded. Then the dads and their sons chopped up a small pile of the wood

Colors

Today I want to talk about my favorite colors. They are blue, deep raspberry, dark green, and brown. From these colors I probably like blue. There are different shades of blue, but sky-blue is my favorite shade.  My favorite shade of brown, is not light or dark, but right in the middle. When I color pictures, I like to mix dark and light colors together. I might use light brown for the hair and deep red for the shirt. I also like to use yellow for the hair too, but I usually use brown.

What are your favorite colors?

Flu

About a week ago everyone came down with the flu.  At first, I had a headache. Then my arms started to hurt. It was awful. I was sick for about three days, and then began to improve. A few days later Dad came down with the flu as well, but grew better after three days too!  I still have a little bit of a cough, but it is going away now. The flu is one kind of sickness that I hope you don’t catch.

Persimmon Failure

Our family has a yearly tradition of drying persimmons.  J We had so many persimmons, more than ever before!  Were so excited that we would dry a record number of persimmons this year.  Unfortunately, after hanging the persimmons, the rain began to pour for many days.  Trying to keep the persimmons dry, we kept them in the garage for many days.  The persimmons missed the sunlight.  One at a time they grew moldy and fell on the garage floor.  Now we have about 30 left!  We started with about 750.  We won’t be having many persimmons this year, but we always have next year!

Oh Joshy!

Have you ever heard of the “Joshy song”? While our cousins were here on their vacation, we played a song for our youngest brother, Joshy, on the guitar.  He loved it! He even danced to it!  Here’s how we did it.  First, dad played a tune and would ask one of us to sing a line.  Then dad would repeat what the first person said.  Then he’d call on the next person to add another line to the song.  For example, Aubrey said, “oh, no!” so dad sang, “And Aubrey said ‘oh, no’ and Caleb said,….” And so on.   We all enjoyed it, especially Joshy.

We Got Baby Goats!

On the 13th of January 2013, Patches had triplets two girls and a boy. We don’t exactly have names for them, yet. When they are first born their legs are wobbly and they can barely stand. In a couple days they are running when they see you, and on about the third day they start jumping side-ways and jumping up and down. J Baby goats are really cute to have. If you ever need any, we have some here on our farm that you can buy. J A couple days later another of our goats, Amores, had twin boys. We now have three boys and two girls. Mary, the leader of the herd, should have at least two babies, since last year she had triplets.

The Ski Trip

A couple days ago we went to the snow in Yosemite to go skiing. We left on Sunday and were supposed to ski both Monday and Tuesday. Unfortunantly, some of us fell sick Monday night and had to come back home early Tuesday morning. Tenaya Lodge has a swimming pool that is open from 6:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m. and we went swimming from 7:00 p.m. to 10:00.  Then the next morning we went to Badger Pass, to ski.

 We had lots of fun.

Weather

This past few days it has been a little bit chilly. There has been frost on the roof tops and ice caps on the water, which is especially fun to crack if you are up early enough. Otherwise, it is just a thin layer of ice that breaks when you touch it. During the day it is semi-warm until about 5:00 p.m., and then it turns cold with the dark. :0 Dad said that on his way from work he felt as though he froze on his bike; I can’t blame him because it was freezing. Although I do like the change in weather, I would prefer that it would be a slightly warmer. But the weather would be nice if it could get colder so that we could have snow. J

Happenings in the Shicks Houshold

I thought it would be exciting to share with you what a typical week looks like in our home. When we wake up in the morning we do our chores and study our school books, which include math, language, history, science, health, spelling, handwriting and a little spanish. We play after we finish our school books, and sometimes help mom cook dinner. J I normally struggle with math, but recently it has become a little bit easier. I still prefer history and science. A fun thing that I like to do is write. One story that I have written is Jessica’s Philadelphia Adventure. Sometimes I like to write just for fun, but there is one thing that I do not like to write – book reports! J
